Growing up as the fourth child in a family of fourteen, Esther Miller developed a love for cooking as a youngster. She enjoyed spending time in the kitchen cooking up wonderful dishes to serve to the family. Fulfillment, in her initial career, came when she landed a job in the kitchen of Dunlap Hospital in Orrville and later worked as head cook at Central Christian High School in Kidron, Ohio.
Marrying Leon Miller in 1970 birthed not only the start of their family but of a new vision for a home based business that would unite her love of serving others with a means of providing for her growing family, now totaling four with the additions of Cheryl in 1971 and Maria in 1973. The vision became a reality in 1973 as Esther started her noodle-making endeavor. Putting the girls and product in the car, Esther went store to store selling her homemade noodles. With her first accounts, Berg's IGA in Dalton, Kroger in Wooster and Hawkins Market in Wooster, Mrs. Miller's Homemade Noodles was off the ground and growing. Leon joined the business full time in 1976. An addition was added to their home in 1981 to accommodate both the growing business and family, Morris was born in 1977 and Brian in 1982.
In 1991 the operation was moved to its present site, the old Ford Garage in Fredericksburg, a little country town nestled in the middle of Ohio's Amish country. In 1996 an 11,000 square foot addition was added to incorporate a sales room, separate areas for processing, packaging, storage and loading as well as more office space and a lunch room for employees. The purchase and redesign of special mixing, kneading and drying equipment has enabled the family to meet the production needs of the large stores and brokers, while maintaining the special quality that was birthed on Mrs. Miller's kitchen counter. Today the whole family, including Cheryl's husband Olger and Morris' wife Linda, work to provide others with, as Esther says, “Just plain good food.”
